Community Food Donor Spotlight

MarinHealth

MarinHealth is one of ExtraFood’s most generous long-term partners. They joined our food donor program in our third week of operation in December 2013, and, starting in February 2014, they’ve been donating their excess food 365 days a year. We’ve delivered their freshly-made prepared food to 36 distribution partner sites throughout the county. In 2020, MarinHealth’s high-quality food reached more than 1,400 food-insecure people in our community, many of whom are low-income seniors. MarinHealth is also a long-time financial supporter of ExtraFood, helping to expand ExtraFood’s capacity to deliver more food to more people in need. MarinHealth’s support of ExtraFood is aligned with their crucially important mission: to provide the people of Marin with the healing care they want and deserve.

Woodlands Market

In the mid-1980s, Marin native Don Santa, his parents, and three sisters opened their beloved, family-run market in Ross Valley, close to College of Marin’s Kentfield campus. Holding true to their mission, they provide customers with high-quality products and top-notch service. Woodlands has grown and now includes an additional full-service market in Tiburon on the Boardwalk as well as a San Francisco location in the East Cut / SOMA neighborhood.

Woodlands Market has been recognized locally and nationally as an industry innovator by focusing on natural and sustainable products, supporting local suppliers, and by keeping its steadfast commitment to and involvement in surrounding communities alive.

Operation Sole Power

ExtraFood is one of more than 30 non-profit organizations that helped to distribute 20,000 pounds of local fish to Bay Area families in need during February and March.

With financial support from Catch Together and a grant from the Marin Community Foundation’s Buck Family Fund, a coalition of Bay Area partners purchased fresh-caught fish from Real Good Fish and Anna’s Seafood along with fishermen/women based in Bolinas. This was a unique opportunity to support small, independent, local fisheries and food banks, pantries, and community kitchens to serve our neighbors most in need with high-protein meals.

Through this partnership, ExtraFood has delivered frozen petrale sole to dozens of low-income older adults and many other vulnerable people through our partnerships with EAH Housing, San Geronimo Community Presbyterian Church, and Marin Housing Authority.

Grocery Outlet, San Rafael

We are delighted to welcome Grocery Outlet in San Rafael to ExtraFood’s coalition of 275+ food donors. A family-run business owned by brothers Edwin and Jonathan, who care deeply about making healthy, fresh food affordable, Grocery Outlet stocks items from manufacturers that would otherwise be thrown away, increasing access to healthy food for the residents in nearby communities, including the Canal. Located in the Marin Square shopping center, Grocery Outlet donates packaged goods, baked goods, salads, prepared food, and produce, and has also donated hundreds of pounds of meat since joining ExtraFood’s food recovery program in December 2020.
