ExtraFood Responds to the Crisis: Giving 6,000 Meals to Marin’s Food-Insecure with Insalata’s

At ExtraFood, we are quickly expanding our work in response to the crisis and the great need for food delivery. Today we launched a project with Insalata's Restaurant to give 6,000 freshly-made meals to food-insecure people sheltering in place in Marin.
ExtraFood Founding Board member and Insalata's owner Heidi Krahling is deploying a small crew in the restaurant's kitchen, under strict sanitary and distancing guidelines, to cook and package meals for ExtraFood. For 2 months, Insalata's will produce 150 nutritious meals per day, 5 days a week, for ExtraFood to deliver for children, seniors, and families in need. ExtraFood will supply some of the meals' ingredients from donations of excess fresh food we rescue through our county-wide food recovery program.
During this crisis, the most frequent and urgent request we hear from people struggling with hunger, by far, is for complete, prepared meals. Just as we did during the fires and power outages, ExtraFood is quickly leveraging its nimble model to increase our response to this need.
At the same time, because of the support of the Marin community and friends like you, we continue to deliver rescued food to people with the greatest need, from Novato to Marin City, from Pt. Reyes to the Canal.
At ExtraFood, we are responding quickly because we can. Being small but mighty, being nimble, and understanding and meeting our community's most pressing needs for the past 6 years are what make us uniquely capable of making an impact during this crisis.
Our project with Insalata's expands our program and our impact. And although some of our food donors have closed their doors for now, there is still plenty of excess fresh food available from other donors, such as grocery stores, and we need to get that food to the people who need it most.

We face higher operational costs, including temporary help for our small staff, increasing staff hours, and expanding the usage hours of our refrigerated vehicles.
