ExtraFood Responds to the Crisis: Giving 20,000+ Meals to People in Need
April 29, 2020
I hope you and yours are well. At this unprecedented time, all of us at ExtraFood.org feel fortunate to be part of a community that comes together and shows support for one another during challenging times.
Some of the people most profoundly affected by this crisis live in the Canal district of San Rafael. Many of the community's children have relied on receiving breakfast and lunch at school. Numerous people have lost their jobs -- some temporarily, some permanently. We are hearing from families who are choosing between paying their rent, food, or utility bills.
From the beginning of the crisis, the most urgent need we have heard is for nutritious, prepared meals. Thanks to friends like you, ExtraFood is quickly expanding its Community Meals program to meet more of the need. Today, through our longtime partnership with San Rafael City Schools, our new partnership with Christopher's Fine Catering, and generous financial donors, we delivered 3,150 meals to families in the Canal.
My heart was in my throat when I arrived onsite, as I saw the line of 350 people hours before the distribution, each family 6 feet apart from the next, with the line stretching far down the street. But my spirit was lifted as people received their meals, nine for each, and I could see some of the smiles even behind the masks.
With the addition of Christopher's Fine Catering, 12 restaurants and caterers are now making meals for ExtraFood to get to people hit hardest by the pandemic. With our nimble and scalable model, and the support of a growing network of partners, we are able to respond quickly. With the support of friends like you, we are now giving more than 20,000 freshly-made meals to people in need during the crisis.
The road ahead is long, but together, we will get through this.
