Food Recovery in Marin County: By rescuing excess fresh food from businesses and immediately delivering it to nonprofits serving Marin’s most vulnerable children, adults, and families, we address the critical issues of hunger, wasted food, and the climate crisis.

We've delivered 3,575,576 pounds of food to 124 sites in Marin, keeping 293,727 pounds of methane from warming our planet & reaching 8,000 people every month.

Fairfax Market

A family-owned market located at the north end of town, Fairfax Market has been partnering with ExtraFood since Feb 25, 2015 and is just about to reach their 5th anniversary of partnering with ExtraFood! They have been as regular as clockwork with a three times weekly donation since they began donating. Our amazing volunteer, Hank, jumped in shortly after they became an ExtraFood donor to claim this as his regular weekly food trip and has been picking up food ever since! Robin W became the second, long-time devoted volunteer who has been regularly picking up for a couple years now.

Tobey J.

Tobey joined ExtraFood in August of 2017 and has been an amazing regular volunteer that we can count on every week! She just reached a new milestone with 303 food trips and recovered over 11,000 pounds of food. Tobey recovers a variety of foods from Safeway Novato, Philz Coffee, and picks up a great donation from the wonderful “My Thai” restaurant.

Not only does Tobey make her regular stops, but she enthusiastically jumps in to cover spontaneous food trips whenever she can! In the summer, Tobey also volunteers to recover the amazing produce at the seasonal Novato Farmers’ Market on Tuesday evenings.

Tobey delivers donations to SR Rotary Manor, Centerpoint and Community Action Marin where she has developed great relationships with the teams at each location - and they are so grateful for her commitment and positive attitude.

Tobey has a background in nutrition and appreciates the need for healthy and nutritious choices for people - she started volunteering with ExtraFood because she wanted to find a new way to help with this and to help reduce food waste.

College of Marin

College can be a stressful time for students but when you add food stress to an already full calendar, life can become overwhelming. Upon a recommendation from one of our volunteers, Don C, we connected with Sadika Hara, the director of College of Marin’s Student Activities and Advocacy. She worked with ExtraFood to set up a food pantry for her food insecure students which launched in Dec 2016. Sadika told us stories of students who were hungry, going without meals and some even living out of their cars. ExtraFood is thankful to Don for connecting us to Sadika and a student population who, at the time, was underserved. They are currently receiving a weekly donation from Whole Foods and Safeway.
