ExtraFood's mission is to help end hunger and wasted food in the Bay Area. Our food recovery program rescues excess fresh food from businesses, schools, and gardens and immediately delivers it to people facing food insecurity.
We rescue fresh, excess food from any business or school and immediately deliver it to nonprofit distribution partners, 365 days a year, free of charge. Learn more.
Community Meals donors regularly make a dish for 10-20 people, eg. once per week, and we make sure it gets to people who need it the most. It’s something that’s convenient for our restaurant donors to make — perhaps a little extra of something they’re already making — and we pick it up when it’s convenient for them. Learn more.
Through our partnership with Share the Bounty, volunteers glean or pick up excess fruit and vegetables from backyards, farms, and community gardens. Learn more.
We leverage our many food partner relationships, volunteer network, safety-net partners, and technology systems to prepare for and quickly respond to increasingly frequent disasters and crises. We are actively working with MCF, VOAD, and the County of Marin to create a county-wide disaster-feeding plan. Learn more.
The SOUPer Food Kitchen (Supporting Our Underserved Populations) is a partnership between ExtraFood and Chef Heidi Krahling, Founder of Insalatas Restaurant, that takes rescued surplus food items from various food donors and turns them into healthy and nutritious soups, stews, and broths to donate to people facing food insecurity in our community. "The prepared meals from Marin Health were a big hit! They were gone within 30 minutes. We received chicken, roasted butternut squash, pasta and quinoa. They will have it for dinner and take it to their day program. It's nice when our Direct Support Professionals can quickly prepare a delicious, nutritious meal. Lifehouse is grateful to partner with amazing nonprofits like ExtraFood to help our community live full lives!"
