EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE

ExtraFood Is Proud To Be A Part Of Our Community's Emergency
Preparedness and Response

We leverage our many food partner relationships, volunteer network, safety-net partners, and technology systems to prepare for and quickly respond to increasingly frequent disasters and crises. We are actively working with MCF, VOAD, and the County of Marin
to create a county wide disaster feeding plan.

COVID

During the pandemic, the need for food skyrocketed.

-Through our Community Meals program, ExtraFood worked with our restaurant and caterer partners to give 90,000 freshly-made meals to people hit hardest by the Covid crisis. In negotiating a fair price for the meals, ExtraFood maximized the number of meals for people in need, maximized our financial donors’ investments, and helped to keep food businesses afloat and food-service workers employed.

-Through a partnership with Marin County's Department of Health and Human Services, ExtraFood supplied all of the meals for a group of COVID-positive Marin residents and their families -- 500 people in all -- giving them the fresh food they need to recover and shelter in place safely.

Fires/Power Outages

-During the 2017 fires in Sonoma and Napa Counties, ExtraFood was called on immediately to serve as part of the extended disaster response team and help with the county's work sheltering evacuees. We aided the relief effort by soliciting new food donations, fielding donation offers, and delivering the food to Marin’s main emergency shelter and to “pop-up shelters” across the county. And we also made a difference directly in the fire zone: in one evening alone, we used our extensive network to direct 500 meals from a cancelled Marin event to first responders in Sonoma County.

-During the December 2022 Canal District apartment fire, we quickly sourced fresh food and meals from our many food donor partners and delivered them to the people displaced by the fire.

Furloughed Employees

-At the end of 2018 and heading into the new year, Marin's Coast Guard families, like many federal government employees, were without income for more than a month and had not received back pay. In partnership with Homeward Bound of Marin, ExtraFood was proud to serve these families who serve our country. Homeward Bound provided the families with a delicious sit-down dinner supplied by ExtraFood. And, through the generosity of food donors in ExtraFood's Community Meals program, ExtraFood provided families with a complete, freshly-made meal to take home: lasagna, salad with chicken, roasted vegetables, a baguette with a bottle of olive oil, a bottle of sparkling apple juice, fruit, and freshly-baked cookies.
