VOLUNTEER

Join Our Volunteer Team

We especially need volunteers to help with afternoon food rescues in San Francisco and
school meal pick-ups in Marin

Food Runner volunteers drive, bike, scooter, or walk to a Bay Area business or school and pick up surplus food, then deliver it to a local nonprofit where it is distributed to those in need. That’s it! An hour of your time will make an impact in your community as you help keep excess nutritious food out of the landfills, put food on people’s plates, and help the planet.

To be a volunteer:

  • You need to be 18 or over (or children can volunteer with their parents)
  • Have a vehicle in good working order if volunteering by car. Otherwise we welcome you to rescue food by bike, scooter, or walking.
  • Have an up-to-date driver’s license and car insurance (if volunteering by car)
  • Physically able to lift, load, and unload food donations safely
  • Commit to a minimum of 2 food rescues per month

You will receive:

  • Training on how to conduct a food rescue
  • A flexible volunteer opportunity that works around your schedule
  • Satisfaction in knowing you are helping to reduce food waste and end hunger

"After retiring I was looking for something meaningful to do that enabled me to give back to my community. I discovered the ExtraFood program and thought what a brilliant idea that they can rescue thousands of pounds of food to give to the needy and I have been a volunteer ever since. I appreciate what they are doing and am happy to be part of this wonderful organization."
