Make It Last

Once you bring food home, we can help you make the most of it so nothing goes to waste.

Make Your Food Last Longer

A few simple habits can help your groceries stay fresh longer, stretch further, and save money. You don’t need complicated recipes—just practical tips that work in real life.

Store It Right

  • Keep leafy greens in the fridge with a paper towel
  • Store herbs in a glass of water
  • Keep potatoes, onions, and garlic in a cool, dry place
  • Separate apples and bananas from other produce

Cook It Simply

  • Roast vegetables with oil, salt, and pepper
  • Add veggies to soups, pasta, or stir-fries
  • Sauté greens with garlic and lemon
  • Use familiar recipes and swap in what you have

Make It Last

  • Freeze fruit for smoothies or snacks
  • Freeze bread and reheat as needed
  • Turn ripe produce into soups or sauces
  • Try quick pickling for extra vegetables

Not Sure What to Do With What You Got?

Some foods show up often in pantries but may not be familiar. Here are easy ways to use them:

  • Eggplant → Roast, sauté, or add to pasta
  • Leafy greens → Sauté, soups, smoothies
  • Root vegetables → Roast or add to soups

Plus:

  • Extra fruit → Freeze or cook into sauce
  • Bread → Freeze, toast, or make croutons

From Pantry Bag to Something Delicious

At a recent community cooking class, participants learned how to turn everyday pantry vegetables into homemade pickles using ingredients like carrots, cauliflower, onions, and more.

For many, it was their first time working with some of these foods. By the end, everyone left with new skills, fresh ideas, and the confidence to turn unfamiliar ingredients into something delicious.

New ideas. Less waste. More meals you feel good about.

Best-By, Use-By, Sell-By,
and Freeze-By dates

What do they mean, and how long does food stay safe to use? To reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that these terms are for quality and not for safety.

Best-By: This date indicates when a product will be of the best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

Use-By: This is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality.

Sell-By: This date tells the store how long to display the product for sale for inventory management. It is not a safety date.

Freeze-By: This date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

"I appreciate the opportunity to share with you what ExtraFood enables Park Mkt. to provide for the residents of MVMCC ( appx. 350 seniors ). There are quite a few low income families living here and they constantly mention what a difference the program means to them. We provide several home bags Saturday and Monday for the residents that are no longer able to get out and shop. We have a very dedicated group of residents that never miss the Farmers Market Sunday donations. As the residents gather to wait for the weekly donations they have created quite a lively fun atmosphere sitting and visiting on the bench that is in the breezeway twelve months out of the year, rain or shine. I have a very large white board in the breezeway where the days and stores and approximate delivery times are posted. We have created a strong sense of community around this amazing event that happens four times a week, the gift of free food is never taken for granted, is deeply appreciated and valued beyond words.v"
