Did you know that 1 in 5 people in Marin and 1 in 4 people in San Francisco face food insecurity?
September is Hunger Action Month, dedicated to raising awareness about the pervasive issue of hunger that affects millions of individuals and families across the United States. At ExtraFood, every day is dedicated to fighting hunger right here in the Bay Area, but Hunger Action Month gives us the opportunity to amplify our efforts and call on our community to join us in our mission.
What Makes ExtraFood Unique:
- Food Recovery: ExtraFood focuses on recovering surplus food from local businesses, farmers' markets, schools, backyards, farms, and restaurants that would otherwise go to waste. By redistributing this food to food pantries, senior living facilities, low-income housing units, and after-school programs, we provide nutritious meals to people who are struggling. We don't store food or buy food, we recover fresh, nutritious food and prevent it from going to waste.
- Community Engagement: We believe that addressing hunger requires collective effort. ExtraFood engages the community through volunteer opportunities and partnering with our many food donors and recipient partners. This not only helps in increasing our impact but also raises awareness about the issue of hunger in our region.
- Adaptability: ExtraFood is nimble and responsive. When emergencies like wildfires or the pandemic strike, we adapt quickly to ensure that food continues to reach those in need, no matter the circumstances.
Hunger Action Month: A Call to Action
Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for all of us to come together and make a difference. Here's how you can get involved with ExtraFood during this important month and beyond:

- Volunteer: We rely heavily on dedicated volunteers. Join us in collecting, sorting, and distributing food to make a direct impact in our community.
- Spread Awareness: Use your voice to raise awareness about hunger. Share our mission and the stories of those we've helped to inspire others to take action on our social media platforms. Follow us on Instagram at extrafooddotorg
