Alex’s journey began in 2022 when he was a client at the Haight Ashbury Food Pantry, and soon after, a volunteer. During a shift, he met ExtraFood volunteer Marina T., who encouraged him to join our community. His first food rescue was at the Noriega Safeway, delivering to Greater Prosperity. From that very first experience, he knew ExtraFood was the right fit. Since then, he’s recruited friends, formed deep connections at sites like 5th Street Apartments and Circle of Friends, and found a sense of belonging. “They respect me and I respect them,” he says. “I feel like I have a small community.” At Circle of Friends, he often stays to help serve lunch after dropping off food, and is sometimes treated to a warm meal himself.
Alex goes above and beyond, especially on Saturday mornings when he arrives at Costco at 5am (for a 7am rescue!) to carefully sort through produce, remove anything inedible, and make sure everything is clean and organized for his neighbors. He also loves picking up from Proper Foods during the week, where he’s known and appreciated for his reliability and positive spirit. Even with a full-time job, Alex makes time to show up for his community with care and pride. We’re so grateful for everything he brings to ExtraFood, his heart, his hustle, and his genuine love for the people he serves.
Thank you, Alex!
