Why Waste Food When We Can Share It?

July 10, 2025 /

As we reach the midpoint of 2025, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the powerful progress we've made together—and to thank the incredible community that makes this work possible. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, food donors, community partners, and supporters, ExtraFood has rescued and redistributed more than 2.4 million pounds of food so far this year. That’s 2.4 million pounds of fresh, healthy, often perishable food that would otherwise have gone to waste, now reaching people across our community who need it most.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. By intercepting this food before it could reach the landfill, we’ve also prevented more than 195,000 pounds of methane emissions from entering the atmosphere. That’s a critical win for our planet. Methane is over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term, making food rescue one of the most effective climate solutions we have.

Together, we are not only feeding our community, we are fighting the climate crisis, one rescued delivery at a time. Every pound of food rescued is a step toward a more equitable, sustainable food system. Whether you donate surplus food, volunteer your time, support our programs, or simply share our story—you are part of the solution. As we look to the rest of the year, we’re energized by what’s possible.

The need is still great, but so is the opportunity to make a difference. Thank you for standing with us in this work.
