Happy National Nonprofit Day! Today is a special day to recognize and celebrate the impact that nonprofits like ours make in our communities. "I began as an ExtraFood volunteer in 2016, and my first rescue was from Safeway in San Anselmo. I chose this rescue because it was for an elementary school. At the time, my own children were in elementary school, and supporting kids in need felt right.

Loaded with hundreds of pounds of bread in my SUV, I drove to the school in East San Rafael. As I entered the after-school program classroom, the students greeted me warmly. The program director shared that each child takes a loaf of bread home—much-needed support for families in low-income households.

After the delivery, I sat in my car and cried. It struck me how routine buying bread is for my family, while nearby families struggle to afford groceries. It's unsettling that perfectly good bread would be discarded due to meaningless expiration dates.

Over the next 5 years as a volunteer, I witnessed vast amounts of fresh produce and meals going to waste, even though many face food insecurity in our community. In 2021, I saw a job post for a marketing position that fit my background and applied enthusiastically. Today, I use my marketing skills to spotlight our vital work and I am passionate about our mission.
