Update from ExtraFood on SNAP benefits ending

October 27, 2025 /

This week, many of the 90,000 families and seniors in Marin and San Francisco will not receive the SNAP benefits they rely on to buy groceries. ExtraFood has received urgent calls from our nonprofit partners across the Bay Area desperate to provide food to their clients.

  • An organization that serves 360 developmentally disabled adults in Marin and San Francisco told us most of their clients rely on SNAP and they fear clients won’t have access to enough food to eat in November.
  • A food pantry in Marin reported that the number of families in line this week shot up 150% - an additional 70 families looking for help.
  • A senior housing complex in San Francisco told us that 90% of their disabled residents rely on SNAP, and now they will need groceries delivered ASAP.

ExtraFood has over 12 years of experience responding to disasters and crises, and we are ready to respond now.

As this emergency unfolds, we are taking immediate action to prepare for a surge in requests for food — ensuring no one in our community goes hungry when help is delayed.

With SNAP benefits set to stop on November 1, ExtraFood is acting quickly to meet the surge in demand:

  • Securing additional food donations from our trusted network of food donors and local businesses.
  • Reallocating rescued food across our network to ensure every partner’s needs are met.
  • Coordinating with 400+ nonprofit partners — including senior sites, schools, shelters, and pantries — to get food where it’s needed most.

Together, we’re working around the clock to keep healthy, fresh food flowing to neighbors who can’t afford to wait.
