Celebrating World Environment Day: How ExtraFood Combats Food Waste and Hunger

Today, we join millions around the globe in celebrating our planet and taking action to protect it. At ExtraFood, we're committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship, and we believe that reducing food waste is a powerful way to make a positive impact.

The Connection Between Food Waste and the Environment

Food waste is a significant environmental issue. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), approximately one-third of all food produced globally is wasted each year. When food ends up in landfills, it decomposes and releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In fact, if food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the US and China.

ExtraFood's Role in Reducing Food Waste

At ExtraFood, we have a simple yet impactful mission: rescue surplus food and deliver it to those in need. By redirecting perfectly good food from landfills to the tables of hungry individuals and families, we address both food insecurity and environmental degradation.

Here's how our process works:

  1. Food Recovery: We partner with grocery stores, farmers markets, restaurants, and other food donors to collect surplus food.
  2. Distribution: Our dedicated volunteers and staff deliver the rescued food to community organizations, such as shelters, schools, and food banks.
  3. Impact: Every pound of food we save reduces the environmental footprint and provides nourishment to those who need it most.

The Impact of Our Work

Since our founding in 2013, ExtraFood has:

  • Rescued over 10.5 million pounds of food.
  • Prevented over 850K pounds of methane/CO2 equivalent emissions by diverting food from landfills.

These achievements are a testament to the power of collective action and the difference we can make when we work together.

How You Can Get Involved

This World Environment Day, we invite you to join us in our mission to fight food waste and hunger. Here are a few ways you can help:

  1. Donate: Your financial support enables us to expand our food recovery efforts and reach more people in need.
  2. Volunteer: Become a part of our volunteer team and help rescue and distribute food in your community.
  3. Spread the Word: Share our mission and the importance of reducing food waste with your friends, family, and social networks. Awareness is the first step toward change.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Reducing food waste doesn't just benefit the environment—it strengthens our communities by ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food. This World Environment Day, let's commit to making small changes in our daily lives that can lead to big impacts. Whether it's being mindful of our own food consumption, supporting local food recovery initiatives, or advocating for sustainable practices, every action counts.

At ExtraFood, we're inspired by the difference we can make together. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to creating a healthier, more sustainable world.

Happy World Environment Day!
