From Surplus to Service: Eastdil Secured Volunteers Turn Donated Bread into Comfort Food for Neighbors in Need
At ExtraFood, we believe in the power of community and creativity to fight hunger and food waste. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting an incredible group of corporate volunteers from Eastdil Secured, who rolled up their sleeves to transform rescued ingredients into something truly special: homemade bread pudding.
The bread used in the recipe was donated by Whole Foods and Safeway—just one example of how perfectly good surplus food can become a source of nourishment and joy rather than ending up in a landfill. With heart, teamwork, and a lot of mixing and measuring, the Eastdil Secured crew prepared pans of delicious bread pudding to be shared with those who need it most.
Once the kitchen cooled and the pudding was baked, ExtraFood’s van driver stepped in to deliver the final product to our recipient partners: HealthRIGHT 360 and The Gubbio Project, two incredible organizations serving people experiencing homelessness and hunger in San Francisco.
For many of the individuals served by these partners, a warm dessert like bread pudding is more than just a treat—it’s a reminder that someone cares, that they are not forgotten, and that they are worthy of comfort and dignity.
We’re so grateful to Eastdil Secured for donating their time and energy, to our grocery partners for the generous food donations, and to our entire community for helping us close the loop between excess and need.
