Food Donor Spotlight: Stonestown FM

June 24, 2026 /

Every Sunday, the Stonestown Farmers Market transforms a San Francisco parking lot into a vibrant community hub. While thousands of residents visit for organic strawberries, specialty Asian vegetables, and local dumplings, a second, quieter mission begins as the stalls start to close.

Through ExtraFood, the market's vendors have turned surplus into a superpower. In 2025 alone, these generous farmers and food makers donated a staggering 26,961 lbs of excess food, the vast majority of it being fresh, nutrient-dense produce, to help feed their neighbors in need.

The impact of these donations is felt immediately across the city, particularly at two vital community sites:

Walden House: A cornerstone of San Francisco’s recovery community since 1969, Walden House provides residential treatment and mental health services for individuals overcoming substance use disorders.

Chi Sing Community Center: Located in the Outer Sunset, this center is a lifeline for the neighborhood’s intergenerational families and seniors. Part of the Self-Help for the Elderly network, Chi Sing uses these donations to bolster their nutrition programs and provide daily hot lunches, ensuring that older adults can maintain their independence and dignity through access to high-quality, fresh food.

The over 27,000 pounds donated this year represents more than just weight; it represents thousands of healthy meals and a community that refuses to let good food go to waste.

We appreciate our partnership with the Stonestown Farmers Market!
