Recipient Spotlight!

ExtraFood distributes fresh food to Enriching Lives through Music (ELM), a holistic afterschool program that empowers and nurtures students within the Canal neighborhood, one of the Bay’s most economically and socially segregated communities.

This multiyear program offers free music education to students starting in the 3rd grade all the way to 12th grade. Music is used as the vessel to teach each student discipline, resilience, confidence, and develop a love for learning.

What they could not ignore is that when kids come from school, they often come hungry. With ExtraFood’s donations of ready to eat items, students can keep learning and ELM can keep costs down. Carrie the Administrative Assistant says, “ the ExtraFood donations have been so helpful. Every dollar we don’t spend on food goes towards getting new instruments, repairs, or getting new teachers, or expanding our programs.” This year ELM is so excited to see their entire graduating class enter 4 year universities, many being first generation college students. We are proud to support them with good food to feed their hungry bellies.
