Recipient Spotlight: Self Help for the Elderly
Since 1966, Self-Help for the Elderly has provided assistance and support to seniors in San Francisco to promote their independence, dignity and self-worth. Their goal is to contribute to longer, healthier, more purposeful lives for seniors and food services is one of the biggest ways they do that.
Self help for the Elderly is able to serve over 450+ clients a month in over four locations thanks to Lance Ma and her dedicated team of volunteers.
Different Self Help Sites have different food needs, some hold pantries while others hold meal service. All this is considered as most donations are received at Chi Sing at 3133 Taraval where Lance and her team work to process, sort, and transport donations to the correct location. Produce will be sorted and repackaged, dry goods will be divided up and made into care packages. To Lance, caring for seniors means considering their needs and getting them the highest quality food.
Lance says, "ExtraFood helps a lot, we save so much money, especially with funding cuts, with ExtraFood donation we are able to save up to $2000. It all helps! With sweets and special items we can even make birthday packages."
From Kara’s cupcakes, Gus’s Market, to Safeway donations, no food goes to waste! Thank you Self Help for the Elderly for doing such a great job caring for our community! We are proud to partner with you to feed people who need it most.
