Marin Volunteer Spotlight: Sarah S.
Sarah first came to ExtraFood after reading a newspaper article when the organization was just getting started. While redistributing food is what initially inspired her to join, it’s the people who keep her coming back.
Since then, Sarah has completed 765 food rescue trips, helping redistribute nearly 100,000 pounds of surplus food to community partners across Marin.
From the farmers at local farmers markets to partners like Marin Community Clinics, and especially the fellow volunteers she serves alongside, Sarah has found a strong sense of connection.
Through ExtraFood, Sarah has also had the opportunity to see parts of Marin she might not otherwise encounter, women’s shelters, schools, farms, and other community spaces that deepen her understanding of the county and the people who live here. We are so lucky to have Sarah as a volunteer.
San Francisco Volunteer Spotlight: Don D.
Don has been part of our story since the early days, even before ExtraFood merged with Food Runners. Back in 2013, he heard our Food Runners founder Mary Risley on the radio talking about food rescue and thought it sounded fascinating. He had a truck, wanted to give back to the community, and signed up as a volunteer. He quickly discovered he loved it.
Don began rescuing food from Gus's and Farmstead, then added more routes, including the Ferry Building Farmers Market on Thursday afternoons. Nearly 13 years later, he is still going strong and now handles one of our largest donors, Trader Joe's on Masonic, every Saturday. His truck regularly carries 600 to 1200 pounds of food each week, all delivered consistently and reliably to those who need it most. One of his favorite stops is Pine Street Community, where he delivers to seniors and enjoys talking football with Albert and Billy. Although Don is a devoted Steelers fan, he somehow makes it work.
During the summer months, Don also takes on huge rescues from Outside Lands and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, always ready to help and rarely saying no when we ask. Don brings dedication, generosity, and a great sense of humor to everything he does. We truly would not know what to do without him, and we are incredibly grateful for all that he gives to ExtraFood and our community.
